Red Deer drops below 200 active COVID cases

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer continues its downward trend.

On Sunday, Alberta Health reported 180 active cases in Red Deer, down 23 from Saturday.

Only one new case was identified in the city on Sunday, bringing the total number of COVID cases attributed to the community since the start of the pandemic to 5,670. Recoveries meanwhile, now total 5,450 – an increase of 24 from the day before.

The number of deaths in Red Deer linked to COVID-19 remains at 40, with the last one reported May 31.

The entire Central Zone has 632 active cases of Sunday, a drop of 32. There are 38 hospitalizations, down four, and 10 people receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down one from Saturday. The zone has had 158 deaths, with none reported today.

Provincially, Alberta is reporting 231 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the total number of active cases in the province to 4,884 – down 187 from Saturday.

344 new variant cases were also identified, bringing the total number of active variant cases in the province to 3,442 or 70.4 per cent of all active cases.

With 5,337 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, the test positivity rate is 4.3 per cent.

There are 360 Albertans currently in hospital with COVID-19, down 13 from Saturday, while 96 of those patients are in ICU, down nine from Saturday.

No new deaths were reported on Sunday, meaning the virus’ death toll in Alberta remains at 2,246.

Elsewhere throughout the province, there are currently 1,997 active cases of COVID-19 in the Calgary Zone, 1,315 in the Edmonton Zone, 677 in the North Zone, and 263 active cases of coronavirus in the South Zone.

As of June 5, 3,057,662 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta. That equates to 66.4 percent of the population aged 12 and over that has received at least one dose of vaccine or 56.6 per cent of the total population.

13.9 percent of those aged 12 and over are fully vaccinated, representing 11.8 per cent of the total population. 529,502 Albertans are fully immunized with two doses.
