Crews respond to fire in downtown Red Deer

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story placed the fire at 4920 – 50 Avenue following conversations with RDES and communication from The City. The correct address of where the fire was is 5020 – 50 Avenue. We apologize for the error.

A fire in downtown Red Deer Thursday afternoon is under investigation.

Acting Chief of Red Deer Emergency Services, Tyler Pelke, says crews responded at about 4 p.m. to a fire in the upstairs portion of the building at 5020-50 Avenue.

The fire was located in a residential over commercial suite, and was mostly contained to the suite thanks to the quick work of firefighters and community members.

“There’s a tattoo parlour right nearby, and some staff there helped move a dumpster and lay some hose out with our firefighters,” Pelke says. “One guy actually rescued a dog out of the building.”

A stairwell on the rear of the building which attaches to a storage area belonging to a business called Country Cupboard led to damage in the rear of the downstairs as well. Country Cupboard has had to close because of it.

Brad Legere, Fire Safety Codes Officer, says the cause is undetermined, but residents are reminded to not use extension cords for plugging in electronics.

No one was injured by the fire, and Legere adds it’s lucky the tenant wasn’t home because that stairwell would’ve been their only way out aside from a window.
