Airport eager to see continued revenue growth

Folks at Red Deer Regional Airport shared with city council on Monday their excitement about the year that was and what’s still to come.

Executive Director Graham Ingham told council that 2020 saw a 5.19 per cent increase in revenue year over year, while numbers are so far up in 2021 just over seven per cent.

The increase last year can be attributed to Tucana Aviation coming on board and improved ability to capture revenue. There are also no bad debts resulting from COVID-19.

“That’s really a testament to the types of businesses that are using Red Deer Regional Airport, such as Air Spray, Buffalo Airways which has doubled in size in the last four years, we’ve got Montair, Skywings Aviation and Tucana,” Ingham said. “It’s a good bunch of stable businesses, and although some are hurting a little bit from COVID, it’s not as bad as it could be and that’s very encouraging.”

Ingham shared that operating expenses dipped 14 per cent over the last four years, while overall salaries have been cut seven per cent.

There have also been no incidents or accidents at the airport, and the airport expansion plan has been completed.

Ingham says going forward, Red Deer Regional Airport still has hope it can become home for a low-cost carrier, more than likely Swoop which has offered the airport a letter of support. Enerjet has also submitted a letter of intent.

“We’ve talked for the last three or four years saying this would be fantastic, that it’s a no-brainer, but we’ve never been able to actually point to any data to substantiate that opinion,” the executive director said. “We decided to spend a little money and complete a proper market research study. The results of that show there is very strong demand for what we’re trying to achieve at Red Deer Regional Airport.

The airport’s vision includes a 20-minute parking lot to departure lounge promise, low landing fees and free parking.

Operational objectives continue to be safety first, zero safety incidents, and a complete refurbishment of apron three.

Ingham says they’ll need provincial support and third-party investment in order to have success.

The airport is aiming for five per cent revenue growth annually and maintaining operating expenses within 2.5 per cent, as well as completing capital projects on time and on budget.

It also hopes to raise $35,000 for charity in 2021 and continue to be engaged through community events such as the Harvard Airberta Poker Rally, Santa Claus event and a drive-in movie night. Other goals include hosting an industry training course and speaking with at least four central Alberta municipal councils.
