Annual Community Clean Up in Ponoka begins May 25

May 6, 2021 | 4:21 PM

The Town of Ponoka’s annual back alley collection of compostable yard waste is set to begin.

On May 25, Town crews will make one pass down each back alley in the community to collect yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, weeds, branches less than three feet) in excess of what will fit into a resident’s Green Cart.

Citizens are asked to place all materials for pick up in a pile at their back alley no later than May 24. If you do not have a back alley, you’re asked to place your yard waste at the front of your property near the curb where it is visible for pick up and clear of the roadway.

Residents are also asked not to bag their compostable yard waste. Bagged yard waste will not be picked up to avoid contaminating the compost pile at the Town’s Waste Transfer Station. Other items that will not be picked up include: rocks, construction material, wood, household waste and pet excrement.

In addition, Ponoka residents are encouraged to bring loads of compostable yard waste free of charge to the Town’s Waste Transfer Station. Compostable yard waste brought to the Waste Transfer Station should be in bags or containers that can be emptied into the Town’s compost pile.

Citizens are asked not to use Grey Carts or Green Carts to transport yard waste to the Waste Transfer Station.

Town officials say the Waste Transfer Station does not accept kitchen waste for its compost pile as the facility is not set up to compost that type of material. Kitchen waste can only be composted through the curbside Green Cart program where the waste is transported to an approved composting site.

A complete list of what can be composted curbside in Green Carts is posted on the Town website at www.ponoka.ca.
