Red Deer’s active COVID-19 cases up 73 per cent over past week

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Saturday sits at 391, up 19 from Friday.

There have been 3,151 recoveries, an increase of 15 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 34 to 3,578. The number of deaths in Red Deer linked to COVID-19 is 36, with none reported today.

Over the last seven days, Red Deer has added 262 cases, 95 recoveries and two deaths, while the active case count has risen from 226 to 391.

The last time active cases in Red Deer were that high was March 3 when the city had 409. Since then, the active caseload dipped to 93 on March 16 and has risen again nearly every day.

Meantime, Alberta confirmed 1,486 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, for a total of 169,279 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic 13.5 months ago.

The one day total is out of 16,353 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of ~9.1 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is 17,307, up 548, while recoveries are up to 149,935.

There are 445 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up 22 from Friday, including 94 in intensive care, up one.

Three additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total as of Saturday to 2,037. Two were in Calgary Zone on April 15 and the other was in Edmonton Zone on April 16.

As of Saturday, there have been 15,827 total variant cases of COVID-19 identified in the province, 9,417 of which are active, up 450. That means 54.5 per cent of all active COVID-19 cases in the province are variants of concern, up 0.9 per cent from yesterday.

In the last day, total variant cases are up 977, and three more deaths from variants have been recorded for a total of 52. Those are already included in the overall death toll.

A total of 1,862 variant cases have been identified in Central Zone, all but 11 of them the B.1.1.9 variant. The remainder are the P.1 variant.

Alberta has administered 1,121,901 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of April 16. A total of 225,472 Albertans have been fully vaccinated.

The Central Zone has 1,734 active cases as of Saturday, an increase of 105. There are 45 hospitalizations, up five, and four people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as Friday. The zone has had 129 deaths as a result of COVID-19, none of which were reported today.
