City notifies residents of upcoming noise activity

Residents in northeast Red Deer are being made aware of bird cannon noises planned in the months ahead.

As waterfowl return to the area looking to nest, officials with the City of Red Deer say the Wastewater Treatment Plant will fire bird cannons in an effort to deter the waterfowl from nesting on the plant site.

Starting this week, there will be two cannons going off at random intervals from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. These hours, however, may need to be extended with longer daylight hours.

Officials say the cannons do not pose any danger to the waterfowl, adding that deterring them from nesting at the plant site will protect them from equipment used in ongoing construction work.
