Red Deer records 30th COVID death, active cases down to 195

For the first time in over a month Red Deer has fewer than 200 active cases of COVID-19.

Tuesday’s latest numbers from the province show the city with 195 active cases, down 54 from 249 on Monday and Red Deer’s lowest total since there were 185 active cases as of Feb. 3.

There have been 2,631 recoveries, an increase of 56 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose by just three to a total of 2,856.

Unfortunately, Red Deer has recorded another death due to COVID-19 to bring the total to 30. The death of a man in his 80s on March 9 is linked to the outbreak at Symphony Senior Living Aspen Ridge. The case included comorbidities.

Alberta Health is reporting 21 active cases linked to the Olymel outbreak as of Tuesday, down from 29 yesterday, 494 recovered cases and three deaths out of 518 total cases.

Across the province there was another 255 cases of COVID-19 reported Tuesday. That’s out of 5,434 tests for a positivity rate of 4.7 per cent.

The number of active cases in Alberta stands at 4,470, a decrease of 163 over the past 24 hours.

There are 263 people in hospital because of COVID-19, an increase of nine, including 37 in intensive care, up one.

Nine additional COVID-19 deaths were also reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours, including the one in Red Deer, to bring the province’s total to 1,926.

As of Tuesday, there have been 687 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 28 over the past day, including 674 cases of the UK variant. There have been 130 variant cases in Central Zone.

Alberta has administered 303,823 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of March 8.

The Central Zone has 440 active cases and 31 hospitalizations. Seven people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has now had 116 COVID-related deaths.
