Red Deer down to 288 active cases of COVID-19

Alberta added 341 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday with a positivity rate of 4.2 per cent and 8,142 tests completed.

The number of active cases in the province is 4,649, up 10. Recoveries are up 330 to a total of 128,974.

There are now 247 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up four from Friday, including 42 in intensive care, down two.

One additional COVID-19 death was also reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 1,914. The death occurred on March 4 in Edmonton Zone.

As of Saturday, there have been 599 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 36 over the past day, including 589 cases of the UK variant. There have been 120 variant cases, up three, identified in Central Zone, all of them the UK version.

Alberta has administered 282,674 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of March 5, up 6,955.

Locally, the number of active cases in Red Deer continues trending downward and now sits at 288 as of Saturday, a decrease of 25 over the past 24 hours. This marks the 10th straight day the active caseload has not increased for Red Deer after several straight weeks of spiking figures which saw the city hit a new peak of 574 active cases on Feb. 24.

There have now been 2,524 recoveries, an increase of 28 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by just three to 2,841.

As of Saturday, Alberta Health is reporting 49 active cases of COVID-19 stemming from the outbreak at Olymel, which was declared in November. That’s four less than yesterday. 517 total cases have been identified, up one, and there have been three deaths. The union says its investigation has determined four, but Alberta Health said Saturday they’d de-linked one previous death identified there.

The Central Zone has 511 active cases, down 16 from Friday, and 34 hospitalizations, down one. Eight people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down one. The zone has recorded 115 deaths, none of which were reported today.
