Avalanche warning issued for Rockies near Alberta/B.C. border

CROWSNEST PASS, AB – Backcountry recreators are asked to avoid treacherous terrain.

Avalanche Canada has issued a special public avalanche warning for several regions on both sides of the provincial border. This includes:

• North Rockies
• Cariboos
• Jasper National Park
• Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks
• Kananaskis Country
• South Rockies
• Lizard and Flathead
• Waterton Lakes National Park

The agency says a combination of increasing temperatures and persistent weak layers in the snowpack are having a destabilizing effect.

This could make natural and human-triggered avalanches much more likely.

Backcountry users and anyone recreating in avalanche terrain are advised to exercise caution and to have the essential gear such as a transceiver, probe, and shovel.

Several areas in southeastern B.C. like the South Rockies and Lizard Flathead have a high avalanche rating as of Thursday morning.

For Waterton, the danger rating is “considerable” at low elevations and “high” in mid and alpine ranges.
