Red Deer down to 409 active COVID-19 cases

Red Deer’s active COVID-19 case count continues to decline.

Wednesday’s numbers from Alberta Health show there are 409 active cases in the city, down from 459 as of 24 hours ago.

There have now been 2,385 recoveries, an increase of 64 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 14 to a total of 2,820.

The number of deaths in Red Deer because of COVID-19 remains 26. However, the union representing workers at Olymel is reporting that an employee at their Red Deer plant recently died from the virus.

Officially, Alberta Health is reporting 78 active cases linked to the Olymel outbreak, down from 91 yesterday, 435 recovered cases and two deaths (down from three as was previously reported) out of 515 total cases.

Alberta announced another 402 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. That’s out of 10,362 test results for a positivity rate of 3.9 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is 4,649, an increase of 18 from Tuesday. Recoveries are up 372 to a total of 127,903.

There are now 251 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down 10 from Tuesday, including 48 in intensive care, down six.

Twelve additional COVID-19 deaths were also reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 1,902.

As of Wednesday, there have been 508 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 16 over the past day, including 500 cases of the UK variant (114 in Central Zone).

Alberta has administered 255,283 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of March 2.

The Central Zone has 590 active cases, down 46 from Tuesday, and 32 hospitalizations. Eleven people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has had 112 COVID-related deaths, none of which were reported to Alberta Health over the past 24 hours.
