Central Alberta Soroptimists celebrate International Women’s Day

Soroptimist International of Central Alberta is pleased to present their first virtual International Women’s Day celebration, to be held Sunday March 7, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Soroptimist International is a women’s organization that goes to great lengths to promote concerns, challenges and achievements of women everywhere. With the multiple award programs of the organization, deserving women and girls in the community are recognized and honoured.

“We are very pleased this year to present Melanie Willerth with our Ruby Award-for Women helping Women, said Sherri Smith, President of Soroptimist International of Central Alberta. Melanie is being honored for using her time and talents to help marginalized groups and make our community a better place to live.

The club will also present three Live Your Dream Awards to deserving women. The first winner is Becky Hutchings, from Red Deer County, who is currently enrolled at Olds College taking the Land and Water Resources Diploma Program. The second winner is Alexandra Veno, from Red Deer, who is currently enrolled at the Alberta College of Massage Therapy studying to be a Massage Therapist. The third winner is Catherine Maxwell, from Elnora, currently enrolled at the University of Calgary, and is studying to become a teacher.

The Violet Richardson Awards (for young girl volunteers) will be presented to two high school students. Our first winner is Brianna Ericson, from Lacombe, a Grade 12 student at Lacombe Composite High School. Our second winner is Nicole Homan, from Red Deer, a Grade 12 student at Notre Dame High School.

The club will also announce information about our new Fund for Gender Equality project, The Period Promise. This initiative is coming to Alberta to end help period poverty in our community.
