Ronald McDonald House Charities reimagines winter fundraiser

The restrictions surrounding COVID-19 have led Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Alberta to reimagine two of their biggest winter fundraising events.

Since playing games in local hockey and curling rinks isn’t possible right now, RMHC wanted to find a way to still engage their supporters through some of their favourite activities and help families facing trying times.

As such, they have merged two past signature events – the Freeze the House Bonspiel and the Winterland Invitational.

“What we decided to do as an organization is to put on an event that people could do amidst all the uncertainty around COVID-19, and safely with the restrictions that are currently in place,” explained Julie List, RMHC Marketing and Communications Manager.

“We branded it as the Winterland Invitational and, essentially, it’s inviting all our supporters to get outside, choose a winter activity, and fundraise for our RMHC families.”

Participants can get involved individually by getting outdoors and doing a winter activity such as skating, skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, or even building a snowman, List says.

Last year, Ronald McDonald House served approximately 1,200 families from almost 200 communities across the province.

List says they’ve set a $60,000 fundraising goal.
