Nominations now being accepted for 2021 municipal and school board election

Eligible Red Deerians and central Albertans can now throw their name into the hat for the upcoming 2021 municipal election for mayor, city councillor, or school board trustee positions.

Effective Jan, 1, The City can now start to accept nomination forms for potential candidates for the 2021 general election, set to take place on Monday, October 18.

The election includes municipal positions of one mayor and eight city councilors, as well as seven school board trustee positions for each of the Red Deer Public Schools and Red Deer Catholic Regional School districts.

“Following recent changes to the Local Authorities Election Act, The City will now accept nominations from January 1 until noon on ‘Nomination Day,’ which is September 20 for the coming election,” said Returning Officer Frieda McDougall. “In the past, we have only been able to accept nomination forms on Nomination Day, whereas now candidates can submit their forms at any time, and Nomination Day actually serves as more of a deadline for submissions.”

Forms must be submitted to the Returning Officer. While City Hall remains closed for construction, many staff are working from home. Potential candidates are asked to contact Legislative Services to set up an appointment to drop off their forms. Nomination forms, as well as a full candidate information package, are available on The City’s election website at elections.reddeer.ca.

“We are asking potential candidates to contact The City’s Legislative Services department if they have any questions about the candidate process, as well as to arrange a time to drop off their forms,” said McDougall. “While City Hall and other facilities are closed to the public, and while staff continue to work from home, we will work with potential candidates to arrange an appropriate location to drop off election forms.”

Nominations received will be posted to The City’s website and updated as they come in.

In addition to municipal and school board positions, voters can expect to see a senate election and a referendum question at voting stations on Election Day. The City is also preparing for what measures may need to be in place if Red Deer and Alberta are still in a pandemic state on Election Day.

“While we don’t know how things will look in October, we are planning and preparing for every option,” added McDougall. “Whatever the circumstances, we will ensure voting stations and procedures are safe for voters and election staff.”
