Ponoka opens Ice Skating Trail at Lions Centennial Park

The ice skating trail that loops through Lions Centennial Park in Ponoka is now open and ready for skaters to enjoy.

“We are excited to provide citizens with the opportunity to get outside and enjoy outdoor recreational facilities with their families during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Andrew Jones, Recreation Coordinator for the Town of Ponoka.

Skaters at the Lions Centennial Park ice trail will enjoy an expanded Christmas light display this year.

The ice trail is for public skating only, hockey is not permitted.

The Ponoka East District Fire Department has once again donated its time and equipment this year to work with Town of Ponoka winter operations crews to help build the ice trail. The County Fire Department will continue flooding the ice surface as needed through the winter. Town of Ponoka winter operations crews will clear snow from the ice trail throughout the winter.

The Downtown Skating Plaza remains closed for public use until an official opening is announced. The official opening for the Downtown Skating Plaza will be announced on the Town of Ponoka website at www.ponoka.ca and on the Town’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

Due to COVID-19, skaters are asked to please keep a two metre distance from those outside their household. If there is not enough room to physically distance on the skating trail then please wait until there is more space to go skating.

Skaters are asked to limit their time on the ice to allow others who may be waiting for the opportunity to skate as well. Skaters are also asked to please follow all provincial health orders and recommendations, including physical distancing from those outside your household, and to wear a mask where possible.
