A 26-year-old male from Ottawa has died after a motor vehicle collision near Rimbey on Friday night.

Cpl. Curtis Peters with Alberta RCMP says a call came in around 8:50 about a head-on crash between a Ford pickup truck and a semi.

The crash occurred on Hwy 20 just south of Township Road 432, seven minutes north of town, he says. The pickup crossed into the northbound lane before hitting the semi.

Other motorists who came upon the scene provided first aid until first responders could arrive.

The 57-year-old male driving the semi, a Lacombe resident, was not harmed.

The male from Ottawa was pronounced deceased on scene, while the vehicle’s other occupant, a 25-year-old male from Whitecourt, was taken by ground ambulance to local hospital and then flown by STARS to the U of A Hospital in Edmonton. He remains in serious condition.

RCMP say it isn’t clear which of the pickup’s occupants was driving.

The roadway was closed for several hours as a collision analyst attended the scene.

The investigation into the cause is still ongoing. The name of the deceased is not being released.
