Flashing red? Kids ahead!

Change to school bus rules in Olds

Nov 19, 2020 | 9:58 AM

Beginning on December 1, all school buses will begin to use the eight-way red flashing lights when picking up and dropping off students in the town of Olds.

The change affects the designated school bus areas in Chinook’s Edge schools within the Town of Olds (École Olds Elementary, École Deer Meadow, École Olds High, Horizon School and Olds Career High), along with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools’ Holy Trinity Catholic School.

Officials say this change in procedure allows school buses to operate according to the federal statute and creates a consistency throughout the rural communities served by Chinook’s Edge School Division and Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

For community drivers, this means it is illegal to pass a school bus in either direction when the red lights are flashing.
