The federal and provincial governments have awarded the Town of Rocky Mountain House grant money for a new wastewater treatment facility.

Just shy of $10.9 million from the Canada Infrastructure Program will go toward the project, with another $9.07 million available through Alberta Transportation and the Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership Program.

The state-of-the-art facility will benefit residents of Rocky, as well as Clearwater County.

“A mechanical wastewater treatment facility will serve current and future Town and County residents and businesses for years to come,” said Rocky Mountain House Mayor Tammy Burke. “The Town of Rocky Mountain House is pleased to see our long-range planning is paying off. Through deliberate examination of our infrastructure needs, we were able to secure a combined $20 million towards this important project.”

The planned facility will use a sequencing batch reactor system designed to accommodate a future population of 9,000, and will help the Town reach it’s goal, a release says, of becoming environmental leader.

According to Alberta.ca, the population of Rocky Mountain House was 6,688 in 2019, down from 6,697 a year prior.

“This provincial and federal investment is critical to the quality of life, economic growth and resiliency of our region,” added Mayor Burke. “Thank you to Alberta and Canada for this important environmental step forward for our community.”

Formal approval of funding will be dealt with during Rocky Mountain House town council’s upcoming 2021 budget process.
