Celebrating Seniors

International Day of Older Persons celebrations planned in Ponoka

The Town of Ponoka and the Ponoka branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be co-hosting activities to celebrate International Day of Older Persons on Thursday, October 1 at the Ponoka Civic Centre.

The event, which will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., will include a museum display in the lobby of the Civic Centre featuring historical artifacts illustrating Ponoka’s history, courtesy of the Fort Ostell Museum.

The Town will also showcase new designs for park spaces that are currently underway in Ponoka.

Attendees will also be encouraged to tour the newly added segment of walking trail located between the Civic Centre and the green bridge at the north trail head of the river valley trail system.

Coffee and treats will be served outside at the front entrance to the Civic Centre, weather permitting.

International Day of Older Persons is intended to formally recognize and acknowledge elderly people and their contributions to their communities, raise awareness about seniors’ interests and concerns, and address misconceptions about older persons and aging.

To keep visitors and staff safe during the event, attendees are asked to please sanitize their hands when they arrive, physically distance from those not in their cohort and are encouraged to wear masks.

Visitors to all Town facilities are urged to stay home if they have flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat or shortness of breath; if they have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days; or if they have been in close contact with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19.
