A young driver from B.C. has earned a court date after police clocked a vehicle near Innisfail travelling at over 200 km/h.

Alberta Sheriffs doing patrol on the QE II Highway near Innisfail on the evening of September 15 noticed a Toyota sedan that appeared to be speeding in the left lane.

One officer’s radar gun clocked the vehicle’s speed at 205 km/h as it was passing a semi-truck and trailer, which was traveling at 100 km/h in the right lane.

Because the vehicle was traveling 95 km/h above the highway’s posted speed limit of 110 km/h, officers pulled the vehicle over and conducted a traffic stop.

The driver was given a ticket for exceeding the speed limit and provided a mandatory court date to appear in Red Deer in March.

Alberta Sheriffs said in a Facebook post about the incident that “Speeding isn’t a matter of individual risk: excessive speed endangers others on the road with you, including your passengers and the occupants of other vehicles.”

Motorists ticketed for exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 50 km/h receive an automatic court summons. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a $2,000 fine or six months in jail, or both. A conviction also carries six demerit points and the court also has an option to suspend the offender’s licence.
