MEDICINE HAT, AB- Smoky skies have crept into Medicine Hat.

Much of the smoke is coming from the United States.

The U.S currently has 94 fires burning across the Western States, according to the National Interagency Fire Centre and approximately 4.6 million acres of land has burned.

States that are reporting large fires include California which has 25 large fires burning. That’s followed by Washington state which has 16 large fires burning. Oregon is reporting 13 large fires and Idaho is battling 10 blazes.

Large fires are also burning in Montana, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming.

In B.C. the air quality across much of the province, including Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and Okanagan regions are ranked as ‘ A very high health risk’ or ‘high health risk.’ Residents that are considered at-risk populations are being advised to avoid strenuous activities outdoors and to reschedule activities if they experience coughing or throat irritation.

In Medicine Hat, the air quality index is expected to rise from a three which is considered low-risk to a six which is deemed a moderate risk.

According to Environment Canada, there is no need for the general population to modify outdoor activities unless they experience symptoms if the air quality is deemed a moderate risk. People deemed high risk, however, may consider reducing or rescheduling activities if symptoms persist.
