Sod, brush and yard waste will no longer be accepted at Lacombe’s Wolf Creek Recycle Depot

As of Nov. 1, 2020 the City of Lacombe is eliminating all organics collection at the Wolf Creek Recycle Depot while maintaining the recycling area.

Director of Operations and Planning Jordan Thompson said the decision was made by Council due to increased usage.

“Both residents and commercial operators utilized the site to dispose of brush, grass and yard waste,” said. “Over time the utilization of the site increased, and the volume of material exceeded the City’s ability to manage with in house forces leading to excessively large stockpiles. The stockpiles are unsightly, and a fire hazard.”

Starting Nov. 1, sod, brush and yard waste will no longer be accepted at the depot. The City asks that these items be taken to the Prentiss Transfer Station, which is located at Range Road 260 and Township Road 402, Clive, AB.

Recycling material can continue to be taken to the Wolf Creek Recycling Depot at 5214 Wolf Creek Dr.

The change negligibly impacts the current City Budget, however, the change does impact services.

“The change frees time for City forces, primarily Roads Department staff, to focus on road and sidewalk maintenance over the summer,” Thompson said.

The City will continue to pick up tree and branches at certain times throughout the year.

“Utility Bylaw 393 outlines items accepted in the community lane green bins: grass clippings, garden tops and leaves. Trees and branches are still picked up during the spring and fall community cleanup campaigns,” Thompson said.

The City’s Solid Waste Review was a comprehensive review conducted with the help of Tetra-Tech Canada Inc. The goals of the analysis were as follows:

• To benchmark value for service against that of comparable municipalities
• To develop a long term plan for managing the City’s solid waste in a sustainable, fiscally responsible manner
• To engage the public about the future of solid waste collection in Lacombe.
