Spring runoff prompts road, trail closures

Apr 21, 2020 | 10:32 AM

As of Monday night, City of Red Deer officials say that a portion of 43 Street between 48 Avenue and 49 Avenue has been closed due to localized flooding from Piper Creek spring runoff.

This also includes the pathway parallel to 43 Street and Rotary Park, and the entrance to Rotary Park.

Additionally, 20 Avenue from 39 Street to 55 Street, including the multipurpose pathway, is closed due to flooding.

Barricades have been installed and detours are in place for motorists. Residents are asked to obey all posted signs and trail users are asked to use caution in the area. City crews are monitoring creek levels, which are expected to return to normal in a few days.

With recent warmer temperatures, The City is reminding all residents that ice conditions at community ponds, creeks, and the Red Deer River can be very hazardous and citizens should exercise extreme caution as it is not safe for people or pets to enter the water at this time.
