PCN Women’s Fun Run to continue in unique way

Apr 6, 2020 | 11:00 AM

While virtually every upcoming local event either cancelled or postponed, the annual PCN Women’s Fun Run has found a way to keep things running, albeit in a new way.

Event Coordinator Val Jensen says they just couldn’t bear to not have the fun run this year, so they’re taking up Dr. Deena Hinshaw’s call for families to remain active while practicing safe physical distancing.

“We want our gyms, health clubs, and yoga studios to do a virtual class at 9 a.m. on May 9,” Jensen explains. “We’re even going to have a race bib available, if you want to print it off our website and colour it.”

Jensen says families should post videos to social media showing them being active in some way.

“We want to encourage our children and families to be active in whatever capacity they can. We want to be part of that message,” she says. “We are reimagining what it would be like to be active for the fun run, and leading up to May 9 also. So show us how you would train or what you would be doing if you were coming to the event on that day. We have to do whatever it takes to be active.

“Plus it’s Mother’s Day weekend, so we want to make sure we celebrate women who are leading an active and healthy lifestyle.”

The other focus of the fun run, Jensen notes, is supporting The Mustard Seed’s school lunch program.

“Now more than ever they need our help. They’re still making hundreds of lunches every day, and people are picking up for school-aged kids,” she explains. “This event is free, but we’re encouraging people to register. There is a button on our website where you can add a donation to your registration. Ten dollars will feed a local child for a week.”

Leading up to the event on May 9, share and/or tag your social media posts on the Fun Run’s Facebook page or Instagram account.
