Red Deerians encouraged to ‘shred it’ for fraud prevention
Red Deer RCMP are welcoming residents to its downtown detachment this Wednesday to help prevent fraud.
Shred-It Day encourages people to bring up to three boxes or bags of paper documents with addresses and other personal information to be shredded, free of charge. The documents will be secured in locked bins, then transported off site to be destroyed.
Documents may include tax returns (older than six years), bank and credit card statements, mortgage/investment statements, medical records, or any other document that contains a person’s name, address, age, date of birth, social insurance number, or driver’s license/provincial ID.
“Everyone has a responsibility to make sure their personal and confidential information is properly stored and disposed of,” explains Red Deer RCMP Inspector Mark Groves. “When sensitive information falls into the wrong hands it can lead to fraud and identity theft which often results in financial loss.”
