City opens registrations for final year of Composting at Home program

The City of Red Deer is helping residents dig in and make compost for their yards and gardens one more time with the Composting at Home program.

Starting today, The City of Red Deer is enrolling 90 households to learn how to compost in their own backyards. Participants will be provided with a free compost bin, aerating tool and kitchen catcher, plus training and ongoing support on how to compost.

“Composting at home is one of the best things you can do for the environment, and you get the benefit of creating valuable plant food to use in your yard and garden,” said Lauren Maris, Environmental Program Specialist. “We have taught more than 1,800 people how to compost. Most of them wanted to compost for a long time, but don’t know how to start. We provide all the tools, training and resources participants need to successfully compost.”

Residents who want to participate can go to www.reddeer.ca/composting to register.

The Composting at Home program started in 2012, and it helped to create a new normal for handling organic waste as the Green Cart program was being developed. With the Green Cart program being introduced to Red Deer in 2018, this is the right time to shift efforts to new program ideas and initiatives that help progress The City’s Environmental Master Plan.
