Not guilty pleas have been entered and a judge and jury trial has been ordered for a Red Deer man accused in the fraudulent sale of a motorcycle police say he didn’t own.

Chance Aaron Shaw, 28, faces 11 charges that include fraud over $5000, obtain by false pretenses, and nine counts of breach of conditions. He was arrested by Red Deer RCMP in November of 2019, following alleged offences that took place between June 4-July 21, 2019.

Shaw also faces 14 other charges for allegedly defrauding several people out of thousands of dollars by posing as a lawyer.

Shaw’s counts on those matters include forging a document, two counts of fraud over $5000, three counts of fraud under $5000, six charges of uttering a forged document, false pretence and breach of conditions.

Shaw was charged in relation to those incidents in July of 2017 following a month’s-long RCMP investigation that was launched in March of that year.

Mounties say the investigation began after receiving a complaint that the suspect had represented himself as a lawyer and had taken money from his victims in exchange for reportedly preparing legal documents.

According to police, several more complaints then came in, with RCMP identifying a total of nine victims who reportedly dealt with the suspect in return for legal services on various dates between December, 2016 and April, 2017.

Among those, a process server who was hired by the suspect to serve a civil claim, and one victim who grew suspicious and did not pay the suspect who Mounties say operated under the fictitious name of SS & Associates LLP.

In June of 2017, police executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence and seized electronics and documents relevant to the investigation, including documents under the business name SS & Associates LLP.

On Thursday, following numerous court delays in the case, Judge Bert Skinner ordered not guilty pleas be entered for Shaw regarding the fraudulent motorcycle sale , along with the election of a judge and jury trial.

As for Shaw’s other charges, a two-week adjournment was requested by Jacqueline Fry – acting as agent for Shaw’s defense lawyer Craig Patterson, citing more time needed to review disclosure.

Shaw remains in custody. His case returns to court Feb. 26.
