Special Olympics hosts swim meet at Michener Centre

Special Olympics Alberta held a very competitive event at Red Deer’s Michener Pool on Saturday.

Athletes from Special Olympics clubs across Alberta were invited to the event.

“This event is our annual invitational, and also a qualifier for the provincial swim meet next year in Sherwood Park,” said Connie Biro, meet manager. “We just have a fun time, and we have a supper after for all the athletes where they get a small gift and their ribbons.”

Biro, in her twenty-first year organizing the meet, said more than 130 athletes competed in Red Deer this weekend.

Special Olympics Alberta athletes compete in several disciplines, including ten-pin bowling, floor hockey and skiing. Biro added that their goal as an organization is to create memories for their athletes because it’s something they’re all very passionate about and take seriously.

Saturday was also the date for the Special Olympics Training camp for Team Alberta at Canyon Ski Hill. Six athletes were invited to the ski hill to train ahead of their national competition.

The next swim meet for Special Olympians is March 7 in Airdrie. For more information, visit specialolympics.ca/alberta.
