Weekend recap: Jan. 31-Feb. 1

RED DEER- The RDC Kings & Queens Volleyball teams defeated the SAIT Trojans twice. The Kings Basketball squad swept the weekend series against the visiting Medicine Hat College Rattlers while the Basketball Queens split their games.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Jan. 31 | SAIT

The Red Deer College Queens swept the SAIT Trojans (25-23, 25-17 and 25-19). The Queens recorded six stuff blocks. Kaylee Domoney contributed nine digs and one assist.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, Feb. 1 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens defeated the SAIT Trojans in four sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-15 and 25-13). Red Deer’s Emma Holmes had 19 kills and Ponoka’s Tess Pearman finished with 16. With their 16th consecutive match victory, the Queens (16-2) remain in second spot in the south.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Jan. 31 | SAIT

The RDC Kings dropped the south leading SAIT Trojans in four sets (25-22, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-16). Patrik Toze led the Kings with 14 kills. Setter Thomas Wass finished with 40 assists.

The Red Deer College Kings swept the Trojans (25-20, 25-22 and 25-22). Middle Mark DeWit accumulated eight kills, four digs and one stuff block. Carter Hills had four of the Kings’ eight service aces. The RDC Kings (14-4) share third in the south with the Briercrest College Clippers (14-6).

Queens Basketball | Friday, Jan. 31 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens soundly defeated the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 65-39 at home. Amy Szymanek sparked the offence with 14 points. Britney Peters totaled 12 points and Lauren Cardinal had 11.

The Rattlers grabbed a 61-52 afternoon decision over the Queens. Third-year guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The RDC Queens (7-8) share fifth in the south with the Briercrest College Clippers (7-8). Both squads trail a playoff spot by four points.

Kings Basketball | Friday, Jan. 31 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Kings earned an 80-72 win over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. Red Deer’s Spencer Klassen scored 15 points and became the all-time Kings scoring leader with 1,189 points. The previous record was held by Derek Zaharko (1,179).

“Spencer is a consummate athlete. He bleeds green. He does everything he can on and off the court for the school and the RDC Basketball program. I’m super proud of him and his accomplishments,” says Kings Head Coach Darren Graham.

“I had the privilege of playing with Derek Zaharko, who is a great player and it just shows the tenacity, longevity and hard-work that Spencer has put into his game that he can surpass that record.”

The RDC Kings won 86-66 over the Rattlers. Both Ramiro Martinez Quintanilla Jimenez and Tyronn King scored 22 points. Anthony Harper had ten rebounds. The Kings (8-7) are in fourth in the south standings, only two points behind the third place Briercrest College Clippers (9-6).
