Red Deer County development permits hold strong in 2019

Red Deer County Planning and Development Services has released its 2019 Development Permit totals, and the overall numbers indicate another year of solid growth.

Total building permit values for 2019 tallied just over $84 million, down from $96.7 million in 2018, but still higher than $77.5 million in 2016 and $59.7 million in 2017.

County officials say total building permit figures represent the dollar value of construction that is approved in Red Deer County.

The figures also serve as a barometer of new business activity in a municipality, as all new construction requires the issuing of permits prior to building.

“I am very proud of the staff in Planning and Development Services for their efforts over the last twelve months,” says Planning and Development director and assistant CAO Dave Dittrick, in a release. “I am also very optimistic when I see these figures, as it shows the steady growth of the business community in Red Deer County.”

Dittrick says 2018 was somewhat of an anomaly due to the Canada Winter Games.

“That event skewed the building permit figures higher – which demonstrates that 2019 was a very healthy year for County business, despite the challenging economic picture in the Province.”

“We have seen some great new business open in Red Deer County over the last year,” adds Mayor Jim Wood. “I am hopeful that we will see an even better outcome in 2020. We remain a municipality that businesses of all types want to call home.”
