Rebels on a roll after downing Moose Jaw 7-3

Dec 7, 2019 | 10:04 AM

The Red Deer Rebels got goals from six different players Friday night en route to a 7-3 road win over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Combine that with a Brandon Wheat Kings shootout loss to Kamloops, and the Rebels, who have struggled this season, are just five points back of a wild card playoff spot with two games in hand in the East.

However, it was the home team who got on the board first Friday, Kobe Mohr (3rd) scoring 3:49 in.

Four minutes later, Josh Tarzwell scored his 11th and it came shorthanded to tie things up at 1-1.

Owen Hardy (13th) restored the Warriors’ lead two minutes after Tarzwell’s marker, but another two minutes later, Keaton Sorensen (2nd) equalized for Red Deer once again.

With things tied 2-2 midway through the second period, Dallon Mellin scored his fourth to give Red Deer its first lead of the night.

The clock winding down in the middle stanza, Cayde Augustine notched his first of the year with Mellin in the sin bin for roughing. But just 30 seconds after that, Arshdeep Bains (7th) would score a powerplay marker of his own to send the Rebels to the break with a 4-3 lead.

In the final period, it was all Rebels as Dawson Barteaux (7th) tallied at 6:47, then Ben King (6th) at 15:20. Bains (8th) scored once more into the empty net and that was all she wrote.

Barteaux (1G, 1A) earned first star honours, while Bains (2G, 1A), and Chris Douglas (3A) both had three points, but were snubbed from the three stars in favour of Augustine (1G, 1A, -3) and Alek Sukunda (0G, 0A, E).

Byron Fancy (5-5-0-1) made 18 stops on 21 shots faced for Red Deer. Adam Evanoff made 28 saves for the Warriors.

Next up for Red Deer (10-15-0-3) are the Regina Pats (6-17-3-0) tonight (Dec. 7). Puck drop is at 6 p.m. on 106.7 The Drive.
