Lacombe lowers projected tax hike for 2020

Lacombe City Council has taken further steps to keep any tax rate increases for residents next year to a minimum.

On Monday, council directed administration to return the 2020 Operating Budget, based on a 0.9 per cent tax rate increase, to the Dec. 9 regular meeting of council for final adoption.

That’s down from a 1.4 per cent tax rate increase that was originally proposed – a number considered to be in line with Alberta’s Consumer Price Index (CPI).

A zero per cent tax rate increase scenario was also explored by administration.

Lacombe’s 2020 Operating Budget also proposes a utility rate increase of $1.73 per month next year for a residential house consuming 18 cubic metres of water and receiving weekly garbage pickup.

Significant service level changes previously noted in the Operating Budget include new services such as automated traffic enforcement, support for the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation, and discontinuation of BOLT Transit.

The 2020 provisional operating budget also contains $1.82 million of new debt to support development on the north side of the community.
