Red Deer ‘Welcome’ sign wins two national awards
Two national awards have been given to The City of Red Deer for its south end welcome sign which was installed last February in the run-up to the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
The sign was recognized recently by the Sign Association of Canada and Sign Media Canada, winning best freestanding sign and best in show at the 2019 BOCSIes — the best of Canada’s Sign Industry Awards.
As described by The City, the sign features two parts, including, “a contemporary design that incorporates the words Welcome and Bienvenue. Metal beams and a curved metal ribbon guides motorists from the QE2 onto Gaetz Avenue on the south end of the city. The ribbons represent Red Deer’s connectedness and the river that flows through the community and the metal beams symbolize trees and nature.”
Julia Harvie-Shemko, The City’s Director of Communications and Strategic Planning, says the sign represents Red Deer as a vibrant urban centre.
