PRIDE WEEK 2019

Rainbows fill Bower Ponds to cap off successful Pride Week

Another rainbow-filled Central Alberta Pride Week is in the books.

On Saturday, citizens helped put a bow on the week of festivities by attending the annual Pride in the Park event at Bower Ponds.

Pride Society chair Shannon Humphrey, says judging by how successful the week has been, she believes the organization and the city is heading in the right direction.

“We’re louder and we’re brighter and we’ve got a whole bunch of flags hanging at Bower Ponds. We’ve certainly grown quite a bit in the last five years,” says Humphrey, who proposed to her partner during Saturday’s event.

“What we’d love to see is exactly what Ryan at Famoso did, which was paint the window rainbow. We want to paint the whole city rainbow. That’s scary to some people still, but I think the message is that the rainbow doesn’t just stand for the gays or the queers, it stands for equality and human rights.”

Humphrey adds that in the coming year, they want to continue conversations around an LGBTQ+ resource centre, while also focusing on things like education and promoting allyship.

“Lots of conversations have been sparked by that article, and the ball is certainly rolling,” she says. “Just like the Stonewall event we did this week, we want to do a lot more of that where we’re engaging in panel discussions and constructive conversations with the community.”
