New trail head signs to increase walkability in Rocky

In an effort to increase Rocky Mountain House’s walkability, new trails signs have been installed throughout the community.

After a walkability study was done by Alberta Health Services (AHS), the town decided to team up with the Primary Care Network (PCN) in an attempt to do more.

“When the walkability came out we had discussions with the PCN involvement in the trailhead signs as one of the major components of walkability, making sure people knew where they were on the trail systems,” explained Roger Smolnicky, Director of Recreation and Community Services for the Town of Rocky Mountain House.

“So it was really great when the PCN said yeah, we’ll partner with you on the trail head signs, so this is how it came to be.”

Dr. Marinus Pretorius from PCN was there alongside Mayor Tammy Burke for the ceremonial ribbon cutting of the first trail sign at the corner of Will Sinclair Drive and Highway 11A near the Rocky Mountain House Health Centre.

“We’re trying to get people out and be more active, so we’ve got this lovely town with the beautiful outdoors and we just want to make it more walkable for people, and encourage them to get out and exercise a bit more,” said Dr. Pretorius.

The new trail signs are all a part of a ten year recreation master plan, Smolnicky explains.

“You’ll definitely see expansions to the trail mapping system as the trails expand out as new subdivisions come on. That’s the plan with the new subdivisions is to include the trail to link the whole town together.”
