Red Deer manslaughter trial scheduled for Nov. 2020

A man charged in the death of a man in Red Deer in 2017 will face a jury trial late next year.

Gabriel Juma We Agotic, 35, faces one count of manslaughter for the death of Mathian Chol.

It was just after 6 a.m. on March 29, 2017 when City Mounties were dispatched to an apartment to assist with a male suffering from serious injuries after being assaulted. He was eventually flown to a Calgary hospital and placed on life support before dying the following day.

An autopsy determined Chol, who was 26, died by homicide.

Agotic was eventually arrested in Calgary on July 17, 2017.

A preliminary hearing held in June determined there was enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. A publication ban prevents the sharing of any evidence presented during the preliminary hearing.

Jury selection will take place on November 16, 2020 with the trial expected to take three weeks.
