STOCK UP ON HAY

Alberta horse owners advised to prepare for winter

EDMONTON- Horse owners in the province are being urged to have enough high-quality hay stockpiled by summer’s end to get their animals through next winter.

The Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it doesn’t want a repeat of last season, when the organization investigated just over 400 cases of neglect concerning horses between November and June.

More than 230 animals were taken into protective custody, resulting in $187,000 in costs for the society.

Livestock owners who allow their animals to be in distress could face a maximum fine of $20,000 and a lifetime ban on ownership under the Animal Protection Act.
