Toews makes no promises on Bill 9

EDMONTON – Provincial finance minister Travis Toews won’t promise that public sector workers will get their legally mandated wage arbitration hearings if they don’t happen as planned this fall.

Toews will only say the government intends to hold the hearings this fall.

Last week, he introduced a bill that would delay wage hearings for 180,000 public sector employees, including nurses and teachers.

Those hearings are supposed to be going on between now and the next few months and are part of current collective bargaining agreements.

The bill will push the arbitration until the start of November.

Toews says they want time to get more information on Alberta’s finances before sitting down to negotiate with unions.

But the Opposition NDP and the Alberta Federation of Labour say this is all a smokescreen.

They say the province has no intention of holding arbitration hearings and is laying the groundwork to impose public sector wage cuts.
