Red Deer man facing charges after January school bus crash in Springbrook

May 10, 2019 | 11:10 PM

Charges have been laid against a Red Deer man for his involvement in a school bus crash and armed robbery which took place the morning of Jan. 22.

Blackfalds RCMP say it was around 8 a.m. when they responded to a report of a collision between a pickup truck and school bus, and then a subsequent armed robbery on Range Road 372 near Airport Drive.

Members determined the truck had been stolen out of Drumheller and that the school bus had seven children on board, all of whom go to school in Penhold.

The driver allegedly exited the truck after the crash and brandished a handgun at a passerby who’d stopped to offer assistance. The male suspect then departed in that person’s vehicle.

Amazingly, no one was injured in the incident.

Mounties charged Jason Ionson on April 23 with robbery, assault with a weapon, and dangerous driving, among other things. He has remained in custody since Feb. 26 on unrelated matters.

If anyone has information regarding these suspects, they are asked to contact the Blackfalds RCMP Detachment at 403-885-3300 or their local police. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.”
