Rebels add prospects at WHL Bantam Draft

The Red Deer Rebels added to their group prospects Thursday at the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft today in Red Deer.

After not making a selection in the first round, the Rebels moved up from 31st overall to 23rd overall in a trade with the Brandon Wheat Kings. They then used the pick to select defenceman Hunter Mayo from Martensville Marauders (Saskatchewan Bantam AA).

Last season, Mayo had 42 points in 28 regular season games and 16 points in 9 playoff games. He is listed as 5’11” and 173 pounds.

With their second selection in round two of the draft, 38th overall, the Rebels selected defenceman Jace Weir of North Zone Kings Bantam AA. The Coldstream, B.C. native recorded 32 points in 18 games last season. He is listed at 6’2” and 162 pounds.

In round three, 51st overall, the Rebels selected forward Carter Anderson. This past season with Rink Hockey Academy Bantam Prep, the Thompson, Manitoba native (5’7″, 159 pounds) recorded 28 points in 29 regular season games and two assists in three playoff contests.

With the 98th overall selection in round five, the Rebels took 5’9″ goalie Justen Maric from OHA Edmonton, who posted a league leading 2.37 GAA and .915 save percentage in 2018-19.

With the 114th overall selection in round six, Red Deer chose forward Parker Lalonde from the Warman Wildcats Bantam AA. The Aberdeen, Saskatchewan native is listed at 5’8” and 130 pounds and had 50 points in 31 games last season.

In round eight with the 163rd overall selection, the Rebels selected Jhett Larson, a forward from the Notre Dame Hounds. The Deslike, Saskatchewan native recorded 29 points in 32 games and is listed at 5’7” and 145 pounds.

In round nine with the 181st selection, the Rebels selected defenceman Kody Norberg, also from the Warman Wildcats. Norberg is listed at 5’11” tall and 175 pounds and had 16 points in 31 games.

Four picks later, at 185th overall, Red Deer chose forward Michael Valdez from the Colorado Thunderbirds. Valdez netted 22 points in 21 games last season and is 5’10 and 140 pounds.

In round number 10, the Rebels selected forward Declan Cosford from the Regina Monarchs (Bantam AA). In 2018-19 he collected 45 points in 30 games. He is listed at 6’0” tall and 166 pounds.

In round 11, the Rebels selected 5’11” goaltender Merik Erickson from the Burnaby Winter Club. Erickson posted a 3.08 GAA and .913 save percentage last season.

And with their final pick of the draft in round 12, the Rebels selected defenceman Logan Wright of the Wayzata Trojans. He is listed at 6’4” and 170 pounds.
