Alberta EMS system ‘broken’, says union leader
The head of the Union of Health Sciences Association of Alberta says government data proves Alberta does not have enough ambulances or paramedics.
Mike Parker says the emergency medical services system is a broken one that, in the event of a large-scale disaster, would not meet expectations.
Parker cites Alberta Health Services numbers which show call volumes are up 19 per cent over the past five years and the province’s population has grown by almost 13 per cent.
Only nine ambulances were added during that time, with a five per cent increase in the number of paramedics.
