River levels expected to run average as spring melt continues

River levels around the Drayton Valley area are expected to run within average as spring run off continues in the face of balmy temperatures.

With recent day time highs in the teens and low-twenties, the winter snow pack has quickly evaporated and has caused a spike in the river flow of local rivers like the North Saskatchewan and Pembina Rivers.

River forecaster engineer with Alberta Environment and Parks Khaled Akhdar says this year should see regular flooding along rivers in the area.

“There is not much snow left on the ground in the Drayton Valley area, water levels should remain stable,” said Ahkdar. “The main concern is small creeks that may be overwhelmed by rapid ground snow melt.”
