The Lending Cupboard launches $500,000 capital campaign

The Lending Cupboard has some new digs on the city’s north end, but it needs the community’s help with moving in.

On Tuesday, the organization which lends out medical equipment launched a capital campaign to raise $500,000. The amount will cover the cost of renos at its new location at Gaetz Avenue and 78 Street, as well as some of the initial operating costs and the ability to buy a new larger van.

Currently The Lending Cupboard operates out of a 3500 sq.ft. building on 43 Street near the hospital. The new facility is 6200 sq.ft. and there will be some addition to that for extra storage.

Campaign chair Bradley Williams says renovations will begin in June with moving day being August 1.

“I think we’re all very confident that the community will step forward and be a part of this to get us where we need to be,” he says. “The community has been awesome to us up to this point and we have every reason to believe that will continue.”

Meantime, Executive Director Dawna Morey says they’ve always been committed to getting the most bang for their buck.

“We’ve demonstrated in the 12 years we’ve existed that we’ve been able to take those dollars and stretch them,” she says. “As the organization has grown and we’ve added efficiencies, that comes at a cost.”

The Lending Cupboard opened its doors in Red Deer in 2006 and served around 460 clients that year. In 2018, they’re projecting 10,000.

The group boasts about its ability to help seniors age in place, while also preventing others from having to wait sometimes up to a year for equipment support from the government.

It currently has a $75,000 per year contract with AHS, who they’ll be meeting with next week to talk about an increase.
