Dreeshen disappointed in Bernier’s exit from Conservative Party

Red Deer Mountain View MP Earl Dreeshen says he is disappointed in Maxime Bernier’s decision to leave the Conservative Party of Canada.

Bernier made the announcement Thursday in Ottawa, adding he would be creating a new, right-wing party.

“I have come to realize over the past year that this party is too intellectually and morally corrupt to be reformed,” Bernier told reporters in Ottawa. “The Conservative Party has abandoned conservatives. It does not represent them anymore. And it has nothing of substance to offer Canadians looking for a political alternative. “

Dreeshen says in retrospect, it’s rather obvious Bernier made his decision to leave his Conservative colleagues a long time ago.

“Not once since the last election did he come to me or any of our caucus members to advance any of the ideas that he’s concerned about,” says Dreeshen. “He was my shadow minister for Science, Technology and Innovation when I was on the committee and he had ample opportunities to advance any of those ideas with our team but he just never did.

“I’m disappointed because I knew him and thought of him as a responsible individual,” adds Dreeshen. “But it’s obvious that he had other personal ideas in mind and that’s where he’s going.”

As for the party’s leadership, Dreeshen says Andrew Scheer has his full support.

“We are doing such an amazing job trying to hold this government to account,” states Dreeshen. “We’ve been working as a team, right now we’ve got 3,000 of our members here in Halifax that are working towards our policies for the next upcoming election, people are excited about that. Yes, this is a distraction but we’re simply going to move on and listen to the people like we’ve always said that we’re going to do.”

Bernier did not announce the name of his new party but said he was ready to contact Elections Canada to launch the process of creating it.

The Conservatives are holding their annual retreat this weekend in Halifax.
