Red Deer County youth earns 2018 Great Kid Award

A group of 16 exceptional youth, including one from Red Deer County, were honoured this past weekend at the 18th Annual Great Kids Award ceremony.

The awards recognize kids who’ve done things like overcome life-threatening illnesses, raised money for important causes or stood up for human rights.

Olivia McAuley, 11, of Red Deer County has excelled in life while managing her diabetes.

For several years now, she has participated in fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, including by walking in the Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Last year, McAuley had her hair cut and donated to Wigs for Kids, which benefits kids with cancer. She is also a member of the local 100 Kids Who Care group.

“Even at a young age, these 16 Albertans have exemplified resiliency, leadership, determination and strength,” said Danielle Larivee, Minister of Children’s Services. “It’s exciting to think about what they’ll do next. Young people who make life better for their communities are an inspiration for all of us.”

Winners and their families receive a one-night stay at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton, passes to West Edmonton Mall attractions, and hotel meals. They also receive a trophy from the Ministry of Children’s Services and a prize from a corporate sponsor.

The first Great Kids Award ceremony was held in February 2000.
