Glencross charity poker, rodeo helping families in 7th year

Aug 24, 2018 | 7:30 AM

The 7th annual Glencross Invitational Charity Roughstock Event is once again raising funds for Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta and the Hockey Alberta Foundation’s Every Kid Every Community Program.

Over $1.4 million has been raised for the two organizations over the first six years of the event, which is presented by ATB Financial and the Calgary Flames Foundation.

“Anytime we can give back and support kids who need it, that’s what we’re here for,” Glencross said during Thursday’s charity poker tournament at the Sheraton.

Glencross says it’s heartwarming to see the amount of support his charity event receives each August.

“Central Alberta is such a giving community, especially Red Deer. There are a lot of events that go on in this city (and) a lot of people who continue to support these events and help address the issues that are out there.”

Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving is among those lending his support to this year’s event.

“The recipients and worthwhile causes that benefit from events like this is first and foremost,” he explained. “It’s great to come out and see everyone participate with their time, but also with their chequebook for such a great cause.”

Treliving says it’s also important to support Flames alumni such as Glencross when it comes to charitable endeavours.

“Glenny is a passionate guy about helping others. I got to be involved in this when he was a player, and now (that) he’s retired, and I’m ecstatic to come to Red Deer every year and participate in the event.

“He was a great teammate on the ice and you can see now in Red Deer and surrounding communities that he’s a great teammate off the ice,” Treliving added.

Tonight’s (Friday) roughstock rodeo at the Stockemens Pavilion at Westerner Park goes at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through ticketsalberta.com. Tickets include entrance to a roughstock rodeo featuring elite bull, bronc, bareback riders and stock, including past CFR Champions, followed by a country music concert.
