A program coming to Red Deer aims to let kids experience the game of hockey in a small, yet fun dose.

The First Shift Program is a six-week long program where kids ages 6-10 are introduced to hockey. The Program is based around basic skill development while having fun in a unique environment.

Registration for the Program is $199, and it includes head to toe equipment for each kid to keep, an equipment fitting demonstration, equipment fitting and distribution, as well as a welcome event. Sponsorship from both Canadian Tire and Bauer are what make the low cost possible

“We obviously know that there are various cost barriers with playing hockey, so the first shift program is a program to get them into the game, as that first step as a low cost initiative,” says Bryden Burrell with Hockey Alberta.

The program also features 10 on-ice instructors, ensuring that each kid gets instruction focused on their age and ability.

“We would like to see that as full as possible cause that just means that there are more kids that are able to enjoy hockey, and able to keep playing it as they grow up, and hopefully on into the future when they’re adults as well,” Burrell adds.

The First Shift program in Red Deer goes on October 24, at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. For more information, or to register your child, visit https://www.firstshift.ca/
