Fred Fox, brother of Terry, speaks to Red Deer students

The legacy of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope is living on in the youth of today.

Thirty-eight years after Terry dipped his right leg in the Atlantic Ocean, his older brother Fred was in Red Deer on Friday to talk to students at Don Campbell Elementary.

On one of his two annual PR tours to promote the late summer fixture that is the Terry Fox Run, Fox thanked staff and students at Don Campbell for completing their first event last September.

“I’m here to share that Terry was just an average kid, give them some of the values and things Terry believed in, and that they could be just like Terry very easily,” Fox said. “He’d be so proud to know the young kids, and many of their parents probably weren’t born, are continuing his legacy and dream.”

During an assembly, Fox shared photos from his and Terry’s youth, telling students that their mother always instilled in them to finish what they started.

Fox was also joined by Stephane Pilon, a Red Deer resident who last summer completed the Yukon River Quest, a 700+ km kayak race. He did so in a kayak emblazoned with the Terry Fox Foundation logo.

Pilon says Fox was very present in his own upbringing.

“For me, initially he was an athlete. He always encouraged me to just do more,” Pilon said. “Later in life, I realized he was a lot more, whether it’s creating awareness or raising funds for cancer. He’s always been a true inspiration and without him, I wouldn’t have done the things I’ve done.”

During his kayak demonstration, Pilon was asked by a young boy if Terry Fox had won his race.

Pilon said, “I think he still is winning.”

This year’s Terry Fox Run in Red Deer is happening September 16 at Heritage Ranch.
