Brazeau County selected as $10M Smart Cities Challenge finalist

Brazeau County has been announced as a finalist of Infrastructure Canada’s Smart City Challenge, in a group submission with three surrounding counties.

Brazeau teamed up with Parkland, Lac Ste Anne and Yellowhead counties in their proposal that would “help their agricultural community revitalize and grow through the connection of people to the land and food, while attracting citizens to share in its prosperous, innovative and resilient way of life.”

In November 2017, the federal government challenged communities across the country to develop bold and ambitious ideas to improve the lives of their residents using data and connected technology.

Over 200 communities from across Canada submitted their ideas to the challenge, with only 20 finalists making the cut.

“I was excited to learn that four of our very own counties have been selected to move on to the next step of the challenge,” said Member of Parliament for Yellowhead Jim Eglinski.

The counties’ submission is one of ten in the prize category for up to $10 million, and only two finalists will be selected.

Each finalist community will now receive a $250,000 grant to help it develop its final proposal.

The winners are expected to be announced in the spring of 2019.
