A special haircut to support those battling cancer

A 9-year-old Grade 4 student at Red Deer’s Don Campbell Elementary has made her family and school very proud.

Avani James says it was a close family member who inspired her to cut her hair in support of The Terry Fox Foundation.

“One of my aunties had thyroid cancer when she was 16, and she survived it with surgeries and treatments.”

In front of dozens of schoolmates on Thursday, Avani took off about 10 inches from her long, flowing locks. She was joined by Jolynn Krause, an educational assistant at the school who donated her hair for a third time.

The trimmed hair will be turned into wigs to be donated to cancer patients.

Grade 2 teacher Jan Ludwig says Avani’s generous act perfectly exemplifies Terry Fox’s mantra “To try and help others.”

“I really think it is what our wonderful Avani is doing today. She’s thinking of others and keeping Terry’s dream alive. I think that’s a fabulous thing.

“Avani is one of those caring kids that whenever you see her she’s thinking of other people. She’s got a huge smile on her face and she’s a wonderful member of our school community.”

Avani said they were planning to surprise her aunt by showing her a video of Thursday’s hair cutting.
