Seniors’ Week celebrated at the Golden Circle

Seniors are no slouches — they’re fun and they deserve to celebrated.

That is the main message being touted during Alberta Seniors’ Week, June 3-9.

Monica Morrison, Executive Director with the Golden Circle in Red Deer, says, “We want to celebrate the hard work and the great work that has been done by the generations before us.”

“They like to have fun,” she added during a pancake breakfast on Friday hosted by the Alberta Council on Aging. “It’s also about creating some synergy within the organization, creating synergy within people, getting seniors out together to make new friends, to get them engaged with the community.”

These things are vital to avoiding social isolation, she explains.

Jane Grenier-Frank, Region 5 president with the Council on Aging, says it’s equally important for seniors themselves to celebrate being seniors.

“I think you’re seeing more seniors being more active than ever before, more involved in walking groups, taking yoga, and even guitar lessons,” she says. “We have them doing zumba and you wouldn’t have ever seen them doing that before, but now they go to town.”

Grenier-Frank added that while all these good things are going on, the many unknowns of growing older must be addressed by ensuring there are sufficient housing resources and transitional services for seniors.

Red Deer-North MLA Kim Schreiner was also on hand for the pancake breakfast and applauded the work of the Golden Circle, which has more than 1700 paying members.

“They do a phenomenal job for inclusion, for men and women, all of our seniors. The room is always full and it’s always happy. It’s a wonderful community here at the Golden Circle,” she said.

“Our seniors are the ones who have made our province the best place in Canada to live, work and raise a family. I’m so proud of all the hard work and dedication our seniors have done and had for our community.”

Seniors’ Week at the Golden Circle also included a kick-off BBQ, a fashion show and a talent show. On Friday afternoon, members heard a talk on the best way to downsize.

Once Seniors’ Week wraps up, it makes way for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. The Golden Circle is hosting a seminar that day called ‘No is an answer.’
